  • Getting your Trophies Home (Trophy Export) One of the most common questions is how much it costs to get my trophies back home. Unfortunately, there are many variables to this question, so there is no simple answer. Unfortunately, this usually drives first-time international hunters crazy. So let us unwind some of these Cha-chings. Variable 1: Dip & Pack Dip and pack prepare the cape, skull, and horns (or antlers) for shipment. The cape is usually dry-tanned and folded, the skull is boiled and bleached to rid it of all blood and flesh, and the horns/antlers rid any skin, meat, or blood. If you choose this method, you must send these raw goods to a USDA taxidermist. If your regular taxidermist is not USDA Certified, they will need to pick up the trophies from the USDA Certified taxidermist. The USDA taxidermist must open the crate in a "clean room," inspect for any creepy crawlies and file their import paperwork. There will be a charge for this. If you have the USA Taxidermist mount your trophies, they will usually waive this inspection charge. Find a USDA Certified Taxidermist - Click here! Cha-chings: Dip and Pack fees, USDA Taxidermists Inspection, and possible delivery to your taxidermist Variable 2: Taxidermy A good option is to have your trophies mounted in their country of destination but keep in mind this is only sometimes available. Charity Safaris recommends this option for our South Africa and New Zealand hunters. Unfortunately, the expense in Argentina doesn't make it a viable option. The Dip and Pack option in South Africa usually take about nine to eleven months. This same option in New Zealand is generally six months or less.
  • If your taxidermist's work has a one-year lead time (and most of them do), you could look at 18-23 months before putting up your mounts. If you take the in-country taxidermy option, you may put your mounts in nine for twelve months. After that, taxidermied mounts are final products that can ship to your door after clearing customs. This method skips the USDA Certified taxidermist requirement and saves you some money. The taxidermists we recommend in South Africa and New Zealand do quality work and are also very knowledgeable about the animals in their own countries. However, some U.S. taxidermists may have never mounted some of the trophies you are bringing home. Cha-chings: Taxidermy costs Variable 3: Shipping Crates Whether you have your trophies taxidermied or dipped and packed, they require a custom-built shipping crate. All boxes are made to order and must use fumigated wood to be allowed into the United States. Shipping rates are by dimensional weight. There is no way to know the box size until the crate is built around the animals. The crate size depends on many factors like the number of animals, the size of the horns or antlers, etc. Horns and antlers are usually detached to save room and easily reattached back in the United States. Crates are carefully built to the best size to keep the shipping rates reasonable. Remember, your trophies are tied to your hunting license, which is linked to your export permit and usually makes it impossible to share a crate with your hunting buddies. Your trophies can ship by sea or air. Sea has a lower rate, but your trophies may be subject to salt air for extended periods, which is not good for them. It also takes much longer to reach the United States. So, air shipments are the popular way to get your trophies back. Cha-chings: Shipping Crate, Export permits, and Shipping to the U.S. Variable 4: U.S. Customs Once your crate of trophies lands in a U.S. Customs port, a U.S. Fish and Wildife official will inspect the shipment. Sometimes they x-ray them, and sometimes they will open the box to ensure the trophies in the crate match the trophies on the export permit.
